Skincare can feel overwhelming with all the serums, acids, and moisturizers out there. Where do you begin? Relax, it’s straightforward: start by identifying your skin type. Using products that don’t suit your skin can cause irritation, pimples, or dryness—and nobody wants that.
The five primary skin types
Got normal skin? Lucky you, your skincare routine is simple. Balanced, not too oily or dry, your skin thrives with just a mild cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, and sunscreen. Studies confirm normal skin maintains an ideal sebum-water balance (Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2020), so keep it simple and don’t overcomplicate things.
If your skin feels tight, peels, or looks lackluster, you’re likely dealing with dry skin. This is caused by a lack of lipids in your skin barrier (British Journal of Dermatology, 2019). Opt for thick, nourishing creams packed with ceramides or shea butter, and steer clear of harsh, foamy cleansers, they’ll only worsen the problem.

Oily or combination skin: Navigating the tricky balance
At the opposite end, we have oily skin, which loves to shine (in the less fortunate way). But here’s the trick: too much washing can actually trigger more sebum production (Dermatology Times, 2021). Instead, try a gel cleanser and lighter, oil-free moisturizers. Ingredients like niacinamide can help balance sebum without drying out the skin.
Then there’s combination skin, where your T-zone is throwing a party while your cheeks suffer from dryness. The solution? Use different products where needed perhaps a hydrating serum on dry areas and a mattifying toner on oily spots. Just avoid products with high alcohol content, as they’ll only further irritate the dry zones.
Sensitive skin requires special attention
Does your skin react with redness to the tiniest trigger? You probably have sensitive skin. Opt for fragrance-free, calming ingredients like centella asiatica or oat extract to reduce irritation (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2022). Always do a patch test with new products, your skin will appreciate the caution. Keep in mind that your skin’s needs shift with seasons, stress, or hormonal changes, so pay attention to its signals.
